Carotid artery stenting (CAS) has been recommended by some clinicians as an alternative to carotid endarterectomy (CEA). However, efficacy for CEA has been proven by prospective randomized clinical trial methodology. Similar data are not available for CAS. This presentation describes activities in North America to compare prospectively CAS and CEA in a good-risk population of symptomatic patients with >50% stenoses (CREST, Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy vs. Stent Trial, R01 NS38384-01, NINDS, NIH 1999-2004).
