Severe aortic bifurcation disease and irregular and complex iliac stenoses were treated primarily with covered stents to prevent embolisation and to avoid re-stenosis. The Adventa covered stent deploys with ‘dog boning’ which helps to prevent embolisation. There is total encapsulation of the stent with PTFE material which avoids stainless steel struts from coming into direct contact with the vessel wall and flow stream. This helps to prevent re-stenosis. Over a period of 12 months, from September 02 to August 03, 19 patients had 31 covered stents inserted. One stent was deployed subintimally and occluded. There were no significant complications related to the device. There were no haematomas, infection nor embolisation. Duplex scanning was used to assess for re-stenosis at one month, three months, six months, nine months and twelve months. To date, there has been no re-stenosis in 30 of the stents.
